Trigger points are small, tight knots that develop in muscle tissue and can cause pain when activated. Trigger Point Therapy applies pressure to these trigger points, breaking up adhesions in the muscles and releasing tension which helps promote healing and relaxation.
Trigger point therapy is a type of massage therapy that focuses on the treatment of trigger points, which are areas of tightness and tension in the muscle tissue. These trigger points can cause pain and discomfort in other parts of the body and may be caused by a variety of factors, including muscle strain, repetitive use, or injury. During a trigger point therapy session, the therapist will apply pressure to the trigger points using their fingers, palms, or elbows in order to release the tension and reduce pain. The therapist may also stretch the muscle and use other techniques to improve mobility and reduce discomfort. Trigger point therapy is often used in conjunction with other massage techniques and may be effective in relieving chronic pain and improving overall muscle function.
What is a “Trigger Point”?
A trigger point is a small, tender area within a muscle that can cause pain in other parts of the body. These points are often referred to as “knots” because they can feel like small, hard lumps in the muscle tissue. Trigger points can be caused by a variety of factors, including muscle strain, repetitive use, or injury. They can also be the result of emotional stress or poor posture. When a trigger point is present, it can cause discomfort or pain in the area directly surrounding the trigger point, as well as in other areas of the body. For example, a trigger point in the upper back might cause pain in the neck or shoulders. Trigger points can be sensitive to the touch and may cause discomfort or pain when pressure is applied to them.
What does Trigger Point Therapy Treat?
Here are some common reasons why someone might consider seeking trigger point therapy:
Chronic muscle pain: Trigger point therapy can be effective in relieving chronic muscle pain caused by trigger points.
Poor posture: Poor posture can cause trigger points to form, and trigger point therapy can help to relieve the resulting muscle tension and discomfort.
Repetitive use injuries: People who perform the same movements repeatedly, such as athletes or those who work in physically demanding jobs, may develop trigger points due to the strain on their muscles. Trigger point therapy can help to reduce pain and improve muscle function.
Stress or tension: Emotional stress and tension can cause muscle tension, leading to the formation of trigger points. Trigger point therapy can help to release this tension and reduce discomfort.
Headaches: Some research suggests that trigger point therapy may be effective in reducing the frequency and intensity of headaches, including migraines.
Fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition that is often characterized by the presence of trigger points in the muscles. Trigger point therapy may be helpful in relieving pain and improving overall muscle function in people with fibromyalgia.
What to Expect During a Trigger Point Therapy Session
The length of a trigger point therapy session can vary depending on the specific needs and goals of the individual receiving treatment. In general, our trigger point therapy sessions at Optimized Sports and Family Wellness Center may last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. During this time, the therapist will work to identify and treat trigger points in the muscle tissue. This may involve applying pressure to the trigger points using their fingers, palms, or elbows, as well as stretching the muscle and using other techniques to improve mobility and reduce discomfort.
Some people may need more than one trigger point therapy session in order to achieve the desired results, while others may see improvement after just one session. It is important to discuss your specific needs and goals with your therapist in order to determine the appropriate length of treatment.

Best Chiropractor in town! Dr. Wil is caring, compassionate and knowledgable. He used shockwave treatment on the arthristis in my feet and I felt relief immediately. He has also helped me rehab my shoulder so I can remain active and pain-free. I am now able to workout consistently. I definitely recommend his services!

Great experience! I had an adjustment, dry needling, and cupping, and felt immediate relief afterward. They were professional, attentive, and made me feel comfortable the entire time. Highly recommend!
5 stars. Simply an incredible experience today with Dr. Will at his Sterling location. I came in with a recurring hamstring injury from my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions. He listened carefully, evaluated the problem, and provided a thoughtful plan that included both nutritional guidance and targeted exercises. He also treated the muscle with needling and massage, which made an immediate difference. Highest possible recommendation. I’m looking forward to returning for my second session.
Dr. Will has been a blessing. Best chiropractor in the Sterling area, and surrounding area. Has been able to keep me training pain free for quite some time now.
I first went to Dr. Wil because I strained my back, and he got me sorted out quickly. Since then, I’ve kept going for maintenance. Between CrossFit and a sitting job, my mid-back loves to tighten up and he keeps it in check.<br><br>He really knows his stuff. He explains what’s going on, how it connects to movement and recovery, and treats the root of the issue instead of just cracking things and sending you out the door. I’ve noticed a real difference not only day-to-day, but especially during Spartan race training and recovery.<br><br>If you train hard, sit a lot, or just want someone who keeps your body recovering and ready for whatever comes next, he’s your guy.<br><br>And yes… the adjustments are great, but his pour-over coffee actually seals the deal. ☕️😄
I go to the Sterling location of OS and FW and Dr Ashley is my chiropractor. She listens to my complaints and works to remedy them with big and small moves. She even helped alleviate cold symptoms she noticed I had. She is very knowledgeable and explains ailments and remedies. I highly recommend this practice. She has even helped my daughter’s newborns!
Trying to find a good chiropractor in the area was like playing Russian roulette with back pain as the consequence. It took me 4-5 tries before finding Optimized and I’m so grateful I did. Dr. Wil was thorough and patient and I cannot recommend him enough. He’s fantastic!
Dr. Wil was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. He took the time to walk me through my lifting mechanics, corrected my form, and helped me understand how to train smarter with existing knee issues.<br><br>What I appreciated most was how encouraging and thorough he was — he didn’t rush anything and explained why certain adjustments mattered. I left feeling more confident, stronger, and with a clearer plan moving forward.<br><br>If you’re an athlete (especially in jiu jitsu or strength training) and want someone who actually understands movement and injury prevention, I highly recommend him.
I found Dr. Will through multiple friend recommendations after injuring my hip. Highly recommend this team for both injury recovery and general chiropractic or sports medicine maintenance. I now recommend him to all of my friends!
Dr. Will is fantastic.... his knowledge and love for helping people is second to none. He listens to you, you never feel like you're a number being rushed in and out. He takes the time to understand and comes up with a plan. He has helped me with my hand and my back, I figured I was going to need surgery... nope, Dr. Will for the win... thanks so much.

I'm very happy with Dr.Wil's service. He saw me immediately when I hurt my back. He explained my injury and what he is doing to help me, as well as giving me exercise and instructions on what I can do at home to help with my injury.
I visit Optimized Sports and Family Wellness because I injured my back. I was in so much pain that I could barely walk, but Dr. Wilmer Melendez Negron at Optimized Sports and Family Wellness worked wonders! He gave me dry needling and shockwave treatment, and the relief was almost immediate.<br><br>Dr. Melendez Negron is incredibly skilled, compassionate, and truly dedicated to his patients. If you're dealing with pain, I can't recommend him enough. His treatments have made a huge difference for me!
This was my initial assessment visit with Dr. Mel. I immediately felt at ease with him. He is very knowledgeable and explains his plan for me very clearly outlining both the plan and other things for which he was watching (potential risks), etc. Something I REALLY liked is how he put a limit on the number of visits after which I should notice a marked improvement, and what he would recommend after that. This impressed me as much as his knowledge - he said upfront that this wasn't going to be a continuing saga ! Thus far I have only good things to say about Dr. Mel!
I highly recommend Wil. I strained/ pinched my upper back during training and was unable to turn my head for over a week before seeing him. He did an adjustment, dry needles, electro shock and cupping.<br><br>I couldn't lift my head in the morning and returned to doing power cleans the following day. Pretty incredible experience and the new facility is great!
Dr Ash is the best! Long Covid left me with migraines, brain fog and vestibular disturbance. My primary care provider suggested Cranial Sacral Massage to help with my issues. Dr Ash is extremely knowledgeable about this type of treatment, as well as other chiropractic methods to improve my health. She is kind, through, never rushes, explains everything and truly cares about her patients. I highly recommend her!<br>I also see Dr Will and he is also a fantastic chiropractor. I've been doing Brazilian Jujitsu for 5 years and he always knows how to treat my injuries! He educates me on prevention and training smart.<br>Fabulous providers!
Highly recommend Dr. Wil. He’s very knowledgeable and does a verity of treatments including acupuncture and cupping. I know once I leave his office that I will feel great I no time.
Dr Will is the best, he is truly caring and always give his time and dedication to make sure I’m feeling better each visit. Thank you for all you do at optimized sports and wellness!
Dr. Wil is awesome! Knowledgeable, patient with excellent bedside manner. Love his positive energy and holistic approach - healing the whole person during his treatments.
Dr. Wil is a miracle worker. Every time I see him, I leave feeling 100% better than when I arrived. I’m excited to see Dr. Ashley as well since I’m pregnant and she offers a wide range of pregnancy services and expertise! I absolutely love this practice!
Dr. Will is the best! He is very friendly, humble, efficient, and comprehensive with his treatments. He offers a variety of treatment options (soft tissue, active release, dry needling, cupping, shockwave, you name it) and applies them during the visits as needed. I train xfit about 5-6x a weeks. I went to him with an injured shoulder followed by an injured ankle and he tended to all my injuries without any hesitation. Needless to say, I have an ongoing back issue, the last two chiros had a hard time adjusting my right back cuz it's a bit more tight and sometimes I fight it. Dr. Will was actually able to adjust my entire back including the right side that is tighter. He truly cares about the patient recovering from their injuries. He also shares good info about recovery, supplements, and explains why we need it.
Been with doctor will like a year,súper profesional.<br>Take care all my pain, soreness and any that your body need..for me he is the best in the area . 💯 recommend Dr will at OPTIMIZED SPORT AND FAMILY..
After consecutive years of injuries and unfortunate events, I was unable to be on my feet for more than 20 minutes without pain, regardless of what activity I was doing. As someone who runs and exercises to alleviate stress, this was a monumental loss for me. Dr. Wil provided me with an earnest ear and then a thorough rehabilitation plan to get me back on my feet (literally). I’m running again because of him. Thank you, Dr. Wil.
Dr. Wil is always so welcoming, with a big smile and a cup of coffee. He listens to all of my health concerns and always gives me the best advice to help me reduce my back pain. 100% recommended!
Dr.Wil has been great in helping in my recovery. I suffer from lower back pain and elbow pain training in both weight lifting and Jujitsu. He is extremely knowledgeable and caters to your specific needs. He would prescribe some homework exercises which helped me recover/relieve my pains while still allowing me to train.
My friend recommended Dr. Wil after I kept injuring myself or had sore/tight places after training for competitions in CrossFit. He helped me get back to training and I even continued to go just for regular maintenance. Best part is that he listens to what I say and what is bothering me, helps mitigate anything possible, and gives homework to do so you improve positions/mobility. Plus, he always got coffee you can steal and honestly is just a great person. Thanks Doc!
Dr. Will was the only thing that got me through my marathon training and across the finish line. Would recommend him to anyone looking to get past a nagging pain point!
Dr. Will has been a godsend. He's not only incredibly knowledgeable but he also takes the time to listen and fully understand what the issues are. It definitely helped that he had similar injuries and also trains in BJJ (which is how I was injured) so he knew what needed to be done. He gives out homework that adds to his body of work and has more than diminished my overall daily pain. I keep seeing him for tune-ups and to simply get coffee recommendations!
Dr Will is an excellent care provider! He essentially fixes every physical ailment I encounter while working out. Dry needling and adjustments have done wonders for me!
I came in with pain from an old and new injury. I left with full movement in both areas. I Highly recommend Dr. Will for his wonderful bedside manner and the way he practices.
I’ve been having Neck, knee, and Shoulder issues for years due to training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; Dr. Will not only keeps me on the mats, but has single handily kept me from needing surgery! His knowledge and passion is unmatched. The level of professionalism is comforting as he is always learning and staying with innovation in this field! A true gem! Thank you!
